“
KRCC keeps us informed on regional, state, national and
international issues. KRCC entertains us and keeps us company
during these dark and windy months in rural Southern Colorado.”

KRCC RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION
In November 2022, Colorado Springs was rocked by the mass
shooting at LGBTQ nightclub Club Q. In honor of the first anniversary
of the tragedy, KRCC reporter Abigail Beckman produced four
interviews with survivors, which were compiled as a documentary
and published on CPR’s podcast Colorado In Depth. Taken together,
the stories show how each person survives and recovers from
tragedy in their own way. The documentary won a prestigious
National Edward R. Murrow Award for audio reporting as well as an
award from the NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists.
“
KRCC feels like a community to me. It is people
who care about their world and want a trustworthy
source of information about it. It’s people who value
people and finding solutions and being involved and
celebrating the arts. It’s a community I can tap into any
time I want, and community worth supporting.”

HAPPENINGS AT TH E SO UTH E RN
COLORADO PUBLI C MEDI A C E N T E R
KRCC’s home, the Southern Colorado Public Media Center,
was alive with activity and community this year. Its success is an
inspiration for what we will be able to achieve on a larger scale
when we open 777 Grant. Here are a few highlights from the year:
• Colorado Matters host Chandra Thomas Whitfield interviewed
Colorado’s State Historian and Colorado College professor Dr.
Claire Oberon Garcia in front of a live audience in the SCPMC
Community Room
• KRCC, the Colorado College Journalism Institute and RMPBS
partnered to present Warren Zanes’ “Deliver Me From Nowhere
- the Making of Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska”
• The SCPMC Community Room provided space for local
nonprofits, working sessions, video viewings, visiting dignitaries,
recorded panel discussions and performances.
